In this age of Facebook, email, instant messaging, and even webinars, meeting face-to-face may seem to have lost its luster. However human nature hasn’t changed. While we enjoy the day-to-day collaboration our online tools provide, we still crave a warm handshake and to see that email business associate really looks like we imagined.
I had forgotten this need until I attended the Instant Media Profits Workshop this weekend. After reaping huge benefits from the event, I thought back to what motivated me to FINALLY get there in the first place.
Reason #1 – Meet New Folks
I was impressed with the variety of people at the conference this weekend. Used to be anything to do with computers involved 90% men and the rest women with most of them being under the age of 30. This adventure brought out people of all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages, social economics and experience. Even though the leaders of the event fit my initial description (male and under 30), the participants livened things up through their variety. During breaks and meals we got to know each other.
Reason #2 – Build Trust in Person
In marketing we’re aiming to help folks like, know, and trust us, nothing beat shakes someone’s hand and looking them in the eye with a great big smile because you’re glad to meet them or see them again. Some folks are difficult to read or get to know from just an initial greeting. I found there were folks it took me most of the weekend to establish a workable relationship while others warmed up immediately. Again, it’s just human nature. Some of us are extroverts and some of us are introverts.
Reason # 3 – Generate New Ideas
One of the big pros of getting around new folks is to generate new ideas. I find I sometimes stagnate in my own little world when all the hot air is my own. Taking the time to listen to others and what they are doing in their business provides a new infusion of mojo for my own business. It aids in seeing a bigger vision and expanding from the humdrum repetitiveness of day to day work.
Reason #4 – Step Away From the Computer
Taking a break from email and working on a project brings me back fresh (but necessarily rested). Attending an event motivates me to finish my current projects, provide better service to my customers, and start a few new ideas I might have had on hold. The few days away from business are enough to start back with gusto.
